Zelma's dill pickles have won the Blue Ribbon again this year at the Kentucky State Fair! All of you who have sampled them at Thanksgiving know that they are definitely tops. We've had a lot of visitors this month! Jessie, Dan and Anna surprised us by coming in for a long weekend, and Scotty and the kids came in to spend some time with everyone. Then, a week later, we had Katie and Adam with us for an abbreviated version of Grandparents Camp. We're all looking forward to when Anna is old enough to be part of this event. Jessie got to spend a couple of weeks in England in July when her employer, Red Hat, send her to help out in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) bureau, where she got to meet some online colleagues in person and make new friends. See some pictures here. She had a great time but was happy to get home and see her family again. Dan held down the home front in Cary. Anna has been doing great with gymnastics ... Jess has uploaded some pix to her Flickr site. We are still waiting to learn if any living Swiss Bettler kin can be located, but our friend Peter in Zurich has heard from the "Zivilstandsamt" who promises to have an answer for us in a couple of weeks.

| It has been a long time
since I've had time to update this site, but there has finally been some
progress in my genealogy quest. Through a friend-of-a-friend on
Facebook we have finally learned Great-Grandmother Lena's home town,
which turns out to be the village of Lenk, in Canton Bern, Switzerland.
We have also learned the name of grandfather's sister who stayed behind,
which was Martha Albertine. We are now waiting to learn whether
she had a family, or whether Lena also left siblings behind, and whether
we have second or third cousins in Switzerland. More on this as
the story develops! I have finally managed to create a new
genealogy website through my Family Tree Maker program, which can be
visited
here. So far I only have the Bettlers, but will add McCreary-Flournoy,
Taylor, Rainwater and McLin as time permits. This program permits
photographs to be included. I have also created and published scans of the family records pages from the Suter-Edwards Bible, listing births, deaths and marriages from the Suter-Edwards family and later the Edwards-Bettler marriage. In other genealogy news, we found a special deal on DNA analysis on "DNA Day," April 23. You could purchase the whole spectrum of analyses, normally $499, for only $99. So we did and are awaiting results. This will include both medical and ancestral findings. Presumably her medical information will apply to Ginny's brothers equally, and the mitrochondrial DNA information will apply equally not only to her daughters and granddaughter, but also to her female second cousins, the granddaughters of Calla Edwards Yount. Roger is hoping for confirmation of an alleged Cherokee ancestress some generations back. In more recent
news, Roger and Ginny took a 7-day cruise in the Western Caribbean in
late January, visiting Cozumel and Belize City. We took the
opportunity to take a tour of the Mayan ruins near Costa Maya. And
Rachel took a two-week tour of Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangkok in February
... check out some of her pictures here. Jess, Dan and Anna
visited for Anna's 4th birthday in mid-May. Jess will celebrate
her 2nd year at Red Hat this summer, and was recently promoted to Senior
Production Support Engineer (L2) specializing in running Linux on the
IBM zSeries mainframes and Red Hat Messaging with AMQP.

| Ginny has finally managed to sift
through and publish some photos from this past Thanksgiving and
Christmas. We had a smaller Thanksgiving than in some years, but
enjoyed getting together with Matt and Mora, Bob, Pat and Tess, Kathie
and Alan, and Chris and Carrie, and Jess and Anna managed to make it in
from NC before everyone else had to leave. Scotty and Philip,
Katie and Adam didn't come down till Friday. Philip's dad had very
recently passed away, followed shortly by his maternal grandmother, so
they all stayed with his mom Marybeth for the holiday. We had
Aline with us too but she had been under the weather and wasn't up for
much turkey. Shortly after Thanksgiving she had to go back in the
hospital to have a pin placed in her left hip, the one that wasn't
replaced last fall. She tolerated the procedure well but is still
suffering with stomach upset off and on, and spent her Christmas mostly
snug in bed. The rest of us got together for Christmas on the 26th
at the farm and enjoyed another of Roger's fabulous Jacques-Pepin-style
turkeys along with all the usual favorites. The past year has not been as dire for us as for some but we are still hoping for a better 2010. At least we haven't had another power outage since the ice storm, and the August flood mostly spared us. Rachel celebrated a year with Highlands Healthcare, then moved on to Jefferson Manor, a nicer facility off Westport Road. Jessie celebrated a year at Red Hat in July and loves it. Ginny managed to retire again from the musicians' union in April but is still pretty engaged with them; she goes in every week or so to do the books and payroll, and maintains their website. Roger enjoys working with folks in foreclosure, helping them work out deals with their banks and negotiating sales when possible. We still haven't succeeded in putting together the long-discussed European trip ... Ginny is still trying to find enough specific information about Great-Grandmother Lena Bettler to make a trip to Switzerland productive. But a visit to North Carolina is always a pleasant diversion. We also still bat around the idea of a Route 66 tour, which could hopefully include a visit to Ben and Barb in Colorado on the way back, and another visit to Holton, KS. Rachel has a big trip planned for February to Vietnam and Cambodia. So check out our new pictures and let us know what's new with you!

Time again for our annual Thanksgiving roundup. Hope you can join us! So far we are definitely expecting Jess and Anna, and will be missing Tom and Mario who are planning a late-fall Caribbean cruise. We celebrated Aline's 90th birthday recently with her favorite activity, a trip to the boat (formerly Caesar's, now Horseshoe). She had a great time even if she didn't wind up with any profits. We followed up with lunch at Cracker Barrel where she enjoyed a plate of chicken and dumplings. Her memory is still pretty fuzzy but she always recognizes her family and her physical health is quite good. She has made a good recovery from the hip replacement she had to undergo on her last birthday. |

It has been a long time since this page was updated! The New Year started with a one-two punch: Ginny's replacement at the Musicians' Union quit without notice ... via email ... on New Year's Eve. Ginny came back in to hold the fort until a replacement could be identified and trained, which took three months, and is still helping out on a weekly basis to keep the books in order, in addition to retaining her previous position as Webmaster. And in late January, for the second time in six months, we had to haul out the generator for four days and three nights after the big ice storm took down many tree limbs and many electric power lines throughout Louisville and much of Kentucky. This time around it wasn't such a walk in the park; we still had hot water and the stove and whatever could be plugged into the generator but couldn't run the furnace, and it was below freezing. The three of us and two dogs and two cats camped out overnight in the living room with layers of clothing and two space heaters. We got to keep the cable this time but it still wasn't fun. Ginny is by now completely over her gracious, historic neighborhood and all its gracious, weak-limbed historic trees, and ready to move into the 21st Century! It has gotten better since. Jess celebrated her first anniversary at Red Hat in Raleigh in July; Rachel marks her first anniversary at Highlands Health Care this month; and Roger closed his first two real estate short sales this week, after long weeks negotiating with mortgage holders and working out the best resolutions possible for the previous homeowners. We are hoping to take that long-discussed trip along Route 66 this fall. We recently held Grandparents Camp for Katie and Adam on their last few days of summer vacation before starting the new school year in Mason, Ohio: See some pictures here. In other news, Tom and Mario are back from Portugal, and Bud and Barb have relocated from Delaware to Florida. Jesse and Chigusa's younger son Alan graduated from U.C. Berkeley this past spring, and Brian and Lisa's older daughter Alex has graduated from high school and is planning a career as a veterinary technician and later, a vet. Kathie Bettler's new venture, summer drama school has been a big success. It won't be long before we're taking names for Thanksgiving ... check back soon!

| We had a big Christmas and a medium-sized Thanksgiving,
and before that Ginny and Rog got to take a short October
vacation through North Carolina, spent some
time with Jess and family and toured Asheville a bit. October was
a little rockier for Ginny's mom Aline, who fell and broke a hip, and
spent her 89th birthday having hip replacement surgery. She
tolerated the surgery well, and on her recovery Ginny and Rachel moved
her into Westminster Health Facility, next door to where she had been
living for several years at Yellowwood in Clarksville. She is
comfortable but not too much aware of what is going on around her.
She does always perk up for babies and dogs. Check out our Christmas-card photos page for a few family snapshots you may have missed, and thanks to Bud for sharing all the pix of his and Barb's growing family of grandkids. Bud and Barb didn't make it back to town for Thanksgiving this year, but we were happy to see Alan and Kathie, Danny and Annie after an absence of several years. Check out our pix here and Alan's pix here. We hope everyone is surviving the economy ... Happy New Year to all of you!

| Our biggest current news is that we all survived
Hurricane Ike! It blew through Kentucky and Ohio on September 14
and inflicted more widespread tree damage than even the 1974 tornado.
Every block in the Cherokee Triangle featured at least one large tree
either blocking the street or crunching someone's car or roof.
Nearly 300,000 households in the Louisville and Southern Indiana area
lost power. Tom and Matt and Mora lost power for five days, we
lost ours for a week and four hours. Fortunately Matt and Roger
were not caught unprepared, and rolled out their generators. It
brought back vivid memories of the storms of July 2004, where we were
powerless for the five days leading up to Jess and Dan's wedding.
This time we did manage to maintain the fridge, freezer, coffee maker,
microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. Our biggest frustration
was losing our cable service for five days, which effectively cut off
our phones and internet, and made powering up the TVs and computers kind
of pointless. We caught up on email at the library while we
checked out books and DVDs to pass the time. This began Ginny's first week of retirement from the musicians' union, and forced her to rewrite her To Do list. Instead of launching into a new initiative on the genealogy project she dug out a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle and laid it out in the well-windowed dining room. We have decided to put off the Bern visit until spring to allow more time for preliminary research into how and where the Swiss maintain their records. We are still hoping to make some kind of domestic road trip this fall. Jess decided to put her Computer Science degree to work and has landed a job at Red Hat in Raleigh, helping commercial Linux users work through problems or questions with their applications. Anna, who is very social, is enjoying her new daycare. They came in for a quick visit over Labor Day. Rachel is now working as a CNA at nearby Highland Health Care, the facility formerly known as King's Daughters. Aline is still at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Jeff. She was given a pacemaker and otherwise is about the same, comfortable but vague. In Ohio, Scotty is back to work for the new school year, Philip is
still at the Sharonville Ford plant, Katie is in 5th grade and has
chosen cheerleading as an activity, and Adam is a 2nd-grader. His
current activity is football. |

It has been a long, tedious winter and spring but things are finally looking up, weather- and otherwise. Ginny and Rachel were kept busy transitioning Aline from her Clarksville apartment into Hillcrest Centre in Jeffersonville. She had been declining in function noticeably since last year and had finally reached a point where it wasn’t safe for her to live alone. She was hospitalized in early April with an infection which seemed to aggravate her condition from forgetfulness to dementia. We had hoped that with more consistent nutrition and medication she might recover some function, but she remains only vaguely aware of her situation. She is comfortable and really enjoys the food, which is tasty and ample. Her vision has also deteriorated to where she needs bright light to see anything, so she has been placed in a nice, sunny room. She was able to keep her television and favorite chair, but doesn’t pay much attention to either anymore. She is not bedridden but for safety’s sake is kept in a wheelchair most of the time to guard against falls. Rachel and Ginny visit her a couple of times a week, and Jesse came out from California to see her over Derby week. We could not tell that she ever understood who he was. In other sad news, we had to say Goodbye to our faithful buddy of ten years, Jaster the Golden Retriever. Now the fort is held by Wizard and Jake, with feline sidekicks Wickett and Chainsaw (few of you will have seen Chainsaw, who is much more retiring than her name would suggest). Rachel was working on the housekeeping staff at Hillcrest, but showed
such a gift for working with the elderly patients that the management
and staff convinced her to take a Certified Nursing Assistant course so
that she could be better employed working more directly with the
residents. She will have accomplished this by late June. In other family news, we enjoyed hearing about Bud's 200th marathon, the Boston Marathon this past April. And he sent some great photos of the family reunion in Hawaii in April, check the Cousins page to see a few. Tom and Mario have been enjoying their time in Portugal, but plan to return next month in time to observe the celebration of Charlestown's 200th birthday. Tom has created a photo album on Flickr and posted many beautiful photographs of Lisbon. And Alyssa Rowe posted another great song on Total Pop Star
... I think it's too late to vote but check it out

We had a nice Christmas and got to enjoy a few more days with Jess and Anna. Dan had used up his vacation days but was hosted for Christmas by friends in Raleigh. Everyone else but Rachel enjoyed a fine Christmas dinner at Scotty and Philip's house. Rachel was on duty at Hill Crest Nursing Home in Jeffersonville, but enjoys her work and caring for the seniors there. We made sure to bring her a nice plate of dinner! Dan's parents Bruce and Melody are getting ready for their next big adventure, relocating to Germany for several years. To give us a taste of what they are looking forward to, they hosted us to a fine lunch in a little German cafe in Radcliff that they find to be very authentic. And Jess and Ginny managed to spend a day hitting the after-Christmas sales before Jess and Anna had to return home. For those who may have missed it, check out Alyssa Rowe's
lovely Christmas song on
YouTube ...
hard to believe it was just a few years ago she was playing dress-up
upstairs in the costume room. |

Merry Christmas, folks! We have put Thanksgiving behind us but have some snapshots to share. Bud and Barb made it this year, bringing photos of their grandkids and travels, plus yummy sweet potatoes, peanut brittle, and our old favorite, Cherry Crunch. Not a bite of any of it went to waste! This year Roger's parents Zelma and Linden joined us too, bringing farm-fresh onions and sage for the dressing, the year's last home-grown tomatoes, and of course dill pickles. Jess, Dan and Anna, Scotty, Philip, Katie and Adam, Rachel, Tom, Mario and Aline, Bob, Pat and Tess, Bruce and Melody, Larry, and of course Matt and Mora and the mashed potatoes rounded out our party. We missed Alan and Kathie, Bill and Donna and Chris and Carrie, who had all gone to Orlando to spend the holiday with Annie. Jess and Dan are moving into their first house this month. After browsing through many of Raleigh's neighborhoods they settled on an attractive two-story home in their favorite area, Cary (despite learning it was actually an acronym: Containment Area for Relocated Yankees). So for the second season in a row, Christmas will include unpacking boxes, though this should be the last time for awhile. We look forward to getting everyone's Christmas photos and newsletters and will share some of them here after the holidays. So keep in touch!

It has been a long, full summer and fall! Our biggest news is, after 32 years at the TV station, Roger decided to retire. Not exactly to a life of leisure, though ... he has been busier than ever finally being able to devote full time to his real estate investment career. We had originally hoped to make a long road trip this Fall, exploring Route 66 and meeting up with some kinfolk out West along the way, but there have been some other matters come up and that will probably not happen until next spring. Here are a few pix of the retirement festivities. Ginny is still working for the musicians but will probably wrap that up by next year and try to get back to genealogy and visiting grandkids. Jessie and Anna came to town to visit for a couple of days in August and take in the State Fair with us and Roger's parents. Then all the Sterlings headed for a week at the beach in New Jersey. The Sterlings' big news is, Dan's dad Bruce applied for and won a posting to Germany for several years. Bruce and Melody had lived in Germany for some years during the 1980s and are looking forward to a second sojourn, and the rest of us look forward to visiting! Exciting news from South Carolina: Alyssa Rowe, who is an 8th-grader at Rollings Middle School of the Arts in Summerville, was accepted to attend the first-ever Idol Camp in Massachusetts, an offshoot of the American Idol show. For ten days in July she got to practice her singing and songwriting with 150 other kids, and was written up in the local newspaper. Big sister Alex, a junior this year, is also musical ... both the girls sing and play guitar. Nanny and Bop's little house on Brent Street was knocked down this summer, and most of the lots on that side of the street have been cleared. We presume the garage fronting on Barret has plans for the space, although in the meantime half of the driveway next to that lot (which always used to be full of cars undergoing repairs) has been fenced off and is used by Barkstown, a doggie daycare. When Ginny got out of her car to snap pix of the house, fifty dogs took strong exception. (Fortunately, it's a high, strong chain link fence). In other sad news, Jaster's dad Alex finally passed on, having attained the age of fifteen, a very respectable age for a Golden Retriever. Otherwise things are fine in Scotty and Philip's household. Philip is still at Ford and Scotty has resumed her social work career now that Katie and Adam are both in elementary school. We can't believe it is nearly time to send out the
Thanksgiving invitations! But time for everyone to start thinking
about whether you can join us this year. We even have a new
doormat to show you all. So, y'all come! |

| It has been a long, happy spring! We
have just enjoyed a long weekend visit with Dan, Jess and Anna and a lot
of other family to celebrate Anna's first birthday. A couple of
weeks before that, Roger and Ginny journeyed to North Carolina to attend
Jessie's long-awaited graduation from East Carolina University with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Jess plans to be a
full-time mom to Anna for now, but when the time is right there are many
career opportunities awaiting around Raleigh. Ginny and Roger are looking forward to getting the boat out this summer, after poor Rog spent last summer with cast and crutches. The lake level at Lake Cumberland has been lowered by 40 feet or more for repairs to Wolf Creek Dam, but there is still plenty of water left to navigate. Ginny and Melody Sterling are collaborating to complete Anna's genealogy as far back as possible, and hope to make a visit to Frankfort soon to take advantage of the wonderful resources of the History Center and Barb Vogler's tour-directing skills. We hope all of you have a great summer! |
